The Michigan Long Term Care Companion
How to make the system work for you and what to do when it doesn’t.

About the Language

The Companion is written for individuals and their families who are receiving or looking for long term care services. While various professionals will find its information valuable, consumers are the primary audience.

To keep our presentation simple and direct, pronouns like “you” and “your” are used to address consumers throughout the book. “You” may be the person needing or receiving care. Or “you” may be a family member or close friend who is trying to arrange or improve care for a loved one. In either case, we are sure that you will find the information useful.

The Companion is written in “plain English.” But professional terms you may encounter during your long term care experience are identified and defined. These professional terms are placed in italics to familiarize you with them. When in doubt about a term, check the glossary at the end of the book.

Having trouble remembering what a certain acronym, like CBC, means? Consult appendix 6 to review a list of acronyms used in the book.
