AGENCIES RESPONSIBLE FOR REVIEWING HOSPITAL COMPLAINTSIn Michigan, hospitals are evaluated and monitored by several agencies. These agencies and their responsibilities are described below: MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT BUREAU OF HEALTH SYSTEMS (MDBHS): MDBHS licenses hospitals in Michigan and has a unit responsible for reviewing complaints about patient care. To file a complaint, contact: Bureau of Health Systems Intake Unit MICHIGAN PEER REVIEW ORGANIZATION (MPRO): MPRO Reviews hospital utilization practices and the appropriateness and quality of medical care provided to Medicare and Medicaid patients. To file a complaint, Contact: Michigan Peer Review Organization MIGHIGAN DEPARTMENT BUREAU OF HEALTH SYSTEMS is also responsible for reviewing complaints against physicians, nurses and other licensed professionals. Michigan Bureau of Health Systems JOINT COMMISSION ON ACCREDITATION FO HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS (JCAHO): JCAHO is a private (non governmental) agency which sets standards for hospitals. Most hospitals seek accreditation by JCAHO because it is required for reimbursement by many private health insurers as well as Medicare and Medicaid.
