Ombudsman Program

"Ombudsman", a Swedish word meaning "citizens representative", is an advocate for residents of Nursing Homes, Homes for the Aged, and Adult Foster Care Homes.

The Michigan Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is authorized by the Older Americans Act and the Older Michiganian Act to help address the quality of care and quality of life experienced by residents of licensed long term care facilities such as nursing homes, homes for the aged, and adult foster care homes.

Your Local Ombudsman is an advocate for residents in long term care facilities and will assist residents and their families in resolving individual concerns about care, services, rights, safety, admission procedures, billing, and other issues.

Our Ombudsmen are available to explain the long term care system in understandable terms and to help individuals advocate for their rights and to ensure their needs are met. They will also conduct seminars on the Rights of Residents in long term care facilities.

CBC Ombudsman and other staff members initiate special projects, conduct research, and are actively concerned with legislation affecting the well being of the elderly and others who receive long term care. We encourage and help organize forums for consumers to voice their opinions on issues important to the elderly and those who care for them.

Ombudsmen support Resident Councils and Family Councils in nursing homes. If you are interested in developing or strengthening a council in your nursing home, contact your local Citizens for Better Care office. You can reach your Local Long Term Care Ombudsman by calling
